Guidelines to Create an Effective Poster (from NSCU.edu)

  • Use a pleasing arrangement of graphics, text, and colors.
  • Dark letters on light background are the easiest to read.  Pick a theme of 2-3 colors.  Avoid overly bright colors.
  • The poster should be neat and uncluttered.  Leave some open space in the design. Tightly packed space tires the eyes and the mind.  Minimize text and use graphics.  Keep text in blocks of no more than 50-75 words.
  • Use fonts and diagrams or illustrations that are large enough to be read from 6 feet or 1-2 meters away.  Use the same, easy to read font throughout the poster with the title font size around 60, all important points between 24-40, and the smallest text at least 18.  The title lettering should be the largest.  Office and art supply stores have a variety of stick-on letters in a variety of colors and sizes that are ideal for titles and subheadings.
  • Make all illustrations simple and bold.  Leave out any unnecessary detail in the presentation.
  • Organize the poster so that it is self-explanatory and logical.  It should read from the top to bottom, left to right.
  • Prepare a 3-5 minute verbal explanation if asked to “walk me through your poster.”  Give the “big picture;” don’t just read the poster.
  • Highlight the authors’ names, affiliations, and other important points.  You may want to bring additional handouts or business cards to provide interested attendees.

Microsoft PowerPoint Posters

We have created two simple PowerPoint template slides for posters to be printed by the ADRC. Please read the instructions below for further information:

DO NOT copy and paste images, charts and graphs into the PowerPoint slide. Your must insert all of these items into the slide as JPG or TIFF images. This may mean you need to export the charts and graphs as image files from the program of origin or scan them in as images. Once they are JPG or TIFF images files, choose Insert > Picture > From File from within PowerPoint.

DO NOT overlap text box boundaries with other lines or boxes. This may cause these item to not print.

DO NOT leave extra carriage returns at the end of text boxes forcing the boxes to overlap any other object.

The template is half of the final size for printing. Due to PowerPoint page size limitations, the original poster is created half size, and it is then doubled electronically at the time of printing.

These templates may be modified to suit individual needs (size, content, etc.), but it is important to maintain a one inch margin around your poster. The templates provided on this page provide this margin in the form of a red line. Stay within the red line. This margin line will then be deleted before the poster is printed so that it doesn’t show up in the final product.

Use of 14 pt. Arial text will ensure a final text size of 28 pt. This is a good size for viewing from 6+ feet away. We recommend that you do not go any smaller than 10 pt for body text (which would double to 20 pt.). Text for headings may be larger.

You can use some background color for images, different section boxes (as in this template), etc., but please try to avoid using background color for the whole poster. The use of a solid color for the whole background is subject to an extra fee (see below).

Tips to create/print your poster:

If you create your own file, remember to:

  • Always leave a 1" margin around your poster
  • Your slide size should be exactly half of the final print size. The printer will correctly scale your file 200%.
  • The maximum size we can print is 42" x 72". Therefore, your slide cannot be bigger than 21" x 36".
  • Use typical fonts: Arial for PC and Helvetica if you are working on a Mac.
  • Don't copy and paste images, graphs, etc. into the slide. Insert them as images (TIFF, JPG, GIF, BMP).
  • If you use a Mac, do not save image files as QuickTime native or use LZW compression.
  • Review your work for errors! You will be charged for reprints. No exceptions.
