In Memoriam - Memories of Leonard Berg

Remembering Dr. Berg (F. R. Ferraro)

From 1989-1992, I was a post-doctoral fellow in the Wash U. Psych Dept. (with Dave Balota and Martha Storandt) but my time was split between the Hilltop campus and the ADRC.  I can say for sure that my work, and now my career, was changed dramatically by my exposure to Dr. Berg and others with the ADRC.  For those 3 years I must have seen Leonard at least 4-5 times per week, either in the Barnes Hospital halls, the ADRC, or at the Tuesday Seminars.  His impact on me was profound.  He always found time (even if in a hurry, which he usually was) to talk with me, introduce me to others, and generally make me feel at home.   This continued AFTER I left Wash U and for many years following my stint, Leonard (I have a hard time calling him Leonard, although he would always ask me to call him that when I would say Dr. Berg) would send notes and cards seeing how I was doing.  As you can imagine, I was deeply saddened when he suffered his stroke and equally saddened when he passed.  I am glad I was fortunate enough to spend time with Leonard, be it talking about Alzheimer's Disease or the St. Louis Cardinals!  I miss him every day and wonder how my personal and professional life would be so much different without him (and others in St. Louis, Wash U. and the ADRC) in it.
